Evaluations for Hillsborough County Families

Do you evaluate children from Hillsborough County?

Yes. All in-person testing happens at my office in Pinellas County, and Hillsborough families regularly make the trip — from South Tampa and Westchase to Brandon and Riverview. The drive is about half an hour from much of Tampa, and closer to 45 minutes from Brandon and Riverview.

I evaluate children from age 5 through high school, whether they attend a Hillsborough public school, a charter or magnet program, or a private school in the Tampa area. Why do Hillsborough families make the drive?

The short answer is time. A school district evaluation can take up to 90 school days — most of a semester — while I can usually schedule testing within 1 to 2 weeks. The whole process, from the free consultation to your feedback session, takes about 2 to 3 weeks.

That difference matters when a gifted application window is closing, a 504 meeting is on the calendar, or your child is falling further behind each grading period. A private evaluation also gives you a report you own outright: you decide when to share it with the school, and you keep it for admissions applications and future planning.

Will Hillsborough County Public Schools accept a private report?

Yes. My reports are written to meet Florida district requirements and are accepted by Hillsborough County schools for gifted, 504, and IEP consideration. One honest note: the district's staffing committee makes the final eligibility decision — a private evaluation documents what that committee needs, but it does not confer eligibility on its own.

In practice, you bring the report to your school's student services team, and the district reviews it against its own criteria. I write every report with that review in mind. Gifted testing for Hillsborough students

Hillsborough follows Florida's gifted rule (Rule 6A-6.03019, F.A.C.): a full-scale IQ around 130 on an individually administered test, a majority of gifted characteristics on a standardized checklist, and demonstrated need. I test with the WISC-V or RIAS-2 and document each piece for the district's gifted team.
